스리랑카의 「헌법」은 1978년 8월 31일 제정되었다. 1948년 2월 영국으로부터 독립한 스리랑카는 민족 간 대립 등으로 정치적 어려움과 변화를 겪은 뒤 1977년 10월에 대통령 중심제의 헌법 개정을 단행하였고, 1978년 2월에 행정권을 가진 초대 대통령에 자야와르데네가 취임하였다. 현행 헌법은 그해 9월 7일 공포하였으며, 국명을 스리랑카 민주사회주의공화국으로 바꾸었다. 2001년 9월 제17차 헌법 개정을 통해 헌법위원회(Constitutional Council)가 설립되었다. 이 요약본의 하단 목차는 2015년 5월 15일자 개정까지 포함하는 원문을 기초로 작성하였다.
